CNN —Heath Barnes opened his book on the upper decks of the Bahamas-bound Carnival Freedom cruise ship in between bouts of rain. Cruise ship officials reported the fire broke out on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel around 3:15 p.m. local time, according to a news release from Carnival Cruise Line. Witnesses reported the ship may have been struck by lightning, but that has not been confirmed and the cause is still being investigated, according to the cruise line. The ship visited Freeport on Sunday, Carnival said, adding there were no operational issues with the ship’s systems. This was his 18th Carnival Cruise trip.

But behind the scenes, the cruise line is already prepping to debut its next giant vessel: 1,188-foot-long Utopia of the Seas. In July — only six months after Icon's debut — the upcoming mega-ship will join its fleet with a series of three- to four-night cruises from Florida's Port Canaveral, Royal Caribbean says. A woman fell overboard a MSC Cruises luxury ship and died early on Thursday morning. Shortly afterwards, passengers on the ship broke into a fight while waiting to disembark the cruise, the Daily Mail reported. The brawl erupted after the woman fell into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday morning around 5 a.m., per the report. The Italian cruise line said its advanced detection systems immediately alerted them that the woman fell overboard and it then informed passengers that arrival in Florida would be delayed. The US Coast Guard and MSC Cruises did not immediately respond to requests for comment made outside typical working hours.

The U.S. Coast Guard recovered the body of a woman who fell overboard from a cruise ship that was returning to Florida early Thursday morning. A 36-year-old woman, who was not identified, was found 18 miles from the shore of Port Canaveral, according to the Coast Guard's southeast district. "The crew performed an immediate search and rescue operation, alongside the US Coast Guard who supported search efforts with boats and a helicopter," MSC Cruises said. "Unfortunately, despite the rapid rescue operation, the passenger sustained fatal injuries. The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the woman's fall and did not have additional details Thursday.
